September might just be my favorite month. The nights are a little chillier and my fridge at home is stocked with dark beers and Oktoberfest lagers. The kids are heading back to school and the weight of keeping them busy during the summer is finally starting to lift. On the brewing side of things, from the Pacific Northwest to here in the Midwest, hop harvest has started. Giant pumpkins are growing at a rapid rate, but Gretchen the Super Gourd’s sister will not be making it our way this year. She is going to be dropped on some 70’s or 80’s beater at a county festival I’m sure. Mighty Axe hops will be getting to our plot of hops for this year’s version of Running with Axes sooner rather than later. As we gear up for this year’s FINNtoberfest festivities, lagers will be flowing in the taproom, but right behind them is our new honey DIPA, the return of Dead Irish Poet and our Fan Pack 12 pack to come out in October. It will be featuring Dead Irish Poet, Punk Arse Coffee Porter, Huell Melon Helles, and Bunny Run red ale. Here’s what I’m excited about. Let’s talk turkey.

Running With Axes

MN IPA 6.8% ABV 60 IBUS

This year’s version is going to be different, but in a good way. We will be using a couple of different varieties from Mighty Axe hops in Foley, MN this year to include Julius, Comet, Zenia and Tropica. It will be piney, dank and citrusy with aromas of tangerine, orange and pineapple. This will pack a punch for sure. As for the malt side of things, we are using malt from Minnesota’s own Maltwerks, based out of Detroit Lakes. Locally malted pale malt and wheat will provide this IPA with a delicious balance of terroir from the middle of the state (hops) and the north western side of the state (malt.) We are just waiting on Eric and Ben at Mighty Axe to let us know when it’s go time. This beer will also be available on tap in your metro area and in 16oz cans this year. A harvest IPA crusher for sure.

Hop Comb

Double IPA  8.6% ABV 75 IBUS

This Double IPA is brewed with a whole bunch of malt, five pounds of hops per barrel, and 120 pounds of local honey extracted by Bone Lake Meadow Apiary; the same company we used for our Biere de Miel last year. We used columbus, huell melon, falconers flight, amarillo and cascade hops for this one. It’s dry and malty, with a nice character of honey sweetness, and an aroma of melon, kiwi and citrus. Should be ready to serve right after our festival of lagers mid-month.

We are gearing up for a fun filled FINNtoberfest taking place Saturday, September 14th  from 11am-10pm. Join us as we tap 2 new beers including Oaktoberfest, Buck-O-5 (collaboration with Invictus Brewing in Blaine), and the return of Huell Mellon Helles and our 2019 Oktoberfest. You won’t want to miss out on food, live music, games and more!

So, it’s a month of brats, beer, pretzels, festivals and hops. We usually say Slainte for cheers here at FINNEGANS, but for the month of September it’s Prost and what the Germans think us Americans say, Here’s How!
