If the adage “two heads are better than one” applies to beer, Finnegans Inc. and Badger Hill Brewing Co. may be the right track.

The companies announced Wednesday they will share each other’s brewing equipment and ingredients in an alternating proprietorship. The companies will brew from two locations, Badger Hill’s 16,000-square-foot facility in Shakopee and Finnegan’s under-construction brewery and taproom that’s part of Kraus-Anderson’s mixed-use project in downtown Minneapolis. They will alternate production days at each location.


The new brewery in Minneapolis will be Finnegans’ first production plant. Since 2003, all of the company’s beers, including Irish Amber, Blonde Dale and Hoppy Shepherd IPA, have been brewed by St. Paul-based Summit Brewing Co. under contract. Finnegans will begin its own brewing operations sometime in the fall as it transitions from its partnership with Summit. A specific date for when Finnegans will begin using Badger Hill’s facility has yet to be determined, said Jacquie Berglud, founder and CEO of Finnegans.

Under the proprietorship with Badger Hill, Finnegans will perform its ingredient mixing and small batch brewing at its Minneapolis facility, but will do its high-volume brewing and packaging at Badger Hill’s location.

Badger Hill will also do its small batch brewing at Finnegans and the breweries will share staff, Berglud said.

“Finnegans and Badger Hill are taking the alternating proprietorship agreement to a whole new level,” said Broc Krekelberg, president of Badger Hill Brewing, in a statement. “The partnership will allow significantly greater investment into quality control and manufacturing agility than either brewery could do on its own, providing capabilities that breweries of our size could only dream of not too long ago.”

Finnegans is in the process of hiring its first brewmaster, who in addition to managing the company’s microbrewery, will oversee the company’s production at Badger Hill. The new brewmaster will hire his own staff of brewers, Berglud said.

Finnegans’ new location is slated to be complete by spring of 2018, but Berglud is hoping it will be open in time for the 2018 Super Bowl at U.S. Bank Stadium in February.

Finnegans is the ninth-largest brewing company in Minnesota, with 7,620 barrels produced, while Badger Hill is No. 15 with 2,800 barrels produced.
