July Brewer’s Log: Bearded Ears & Grapefruit Cosmic Snowball

July! America! Fireworks! Beer! This is the time to celebrate post-quarantine life by cooking out, hanging out with your friends again, eating s’mores, and most of all, divulging in a glorious craft beer. It has been great to see your faces back at the taproom. Blood Orange Pilsner seems to be flowing out of our taps—Jared and I have been busy making more than we originally intended. We had set out to only brew 80 barrels, but with the high demand, we have surpassed 180 barrels. Amazing job, beer drinkers! 

Since it’s mid-summer already (how?!), we are releasing something special and delicious for you. Check out our July beer releases. 

Bearded Ears 6.7% ABV 14 IBU

This copper-colored beauty rested in our house funked-up barrels for 20 months. It’s a Belgian-style Saison brewed with spelt, the old-world grain that has been used for more than 5,000 years. Websters describes it as “an ancient wheat with long spikelets containing two light red flattened grains,” also known as farro. The nose on this beer reminds me of tart cherries or fresh-baked rhubarb pie. It’s sharp as it hits your tongue, but the large amount of spelt gives it a smooth mouthfeel. It’s truly delicious and worth the wait. We named it after those two red flattened grains that make it look like a beard is growing from the wheat’s ears.

Grapefruit Cosmic Snowball 6.8% ABV 65 IBU

It has been way too long since I’ve made this beer, an American IPA brewed with only pale malt and Comet hops. Along with dry hopping with even more Comet hops, I tossed in 4.1 lbs. per barrel of fresh grapefruit purée. Comet already has the aroma of this particular fruit, but adding the fruit itself pumps up even more. This beer is super delicious on a hot summer day on our patio, your patio, and even The Great Minnesota Get-Together this August. That’s right, the State Fair is back, just like our Grapefruit Cosmic Snowball. But don’t sit on this—it’s only available on tap for a limited time. (But, here’s an insider’s tip: If you can wait, you might be having a can or two (or three) in our “Celebration” Fan Pack this fall…). 

I’m so glad to be sharing these beers with you this month, and I’m excited about what’s coming in August! It’s only July 1, but I’m counting down the days when I get to write to you all again. ‘Til then, be kind, celebrate joy, and sláinte.
