You might already know FINNEGANS has a theme song and a couple of beer-themed apps, but you may not have heard about our mascot. Our dog mascot.
Finnegan, a yellow labrador retriever, was named after the title character of James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake. Fortunately for us, he required no name-changing when he took on his role as bringer of FINNEGANS cheer. To seal the deal even tighter, he sort of resembles Blonde Ale in color, and he’s been dedicated to doing good long before he became our mascot.
Finnegan is a Certified Therapy Dog. That means he brings puppy love to patients, visitors, staff and doctors at two Westfield’s Hospitals in New Richmond and Hudson, Wisconsin. Finnegan and his owner, Bob Molenda, have been doing visits about once per week for the past year. Bob says he would never have even considered volunteering his time doing hospital visits until Finnegan entered his life. After short walks in downtown Stillwater turned into hour long parades with Finnegan insisting on meeting everyone on the block, Bob realized that Finnegan would be perfect for the job.
Finnegan is energetic and playful, yet patient. Bob recounted one time when a young boy with Downs syndrome that Finnegan met at a hospital rushed towards him unexpectedly, diving and grabbing him around the neck. Finnegan was not startled, but instead laid down on the floor with the boy, who hugged him for some time.
Finnegan volunteered his unprecedented people skills to FINNEGANS last march by walking in two of our St. Paddy’s day parades in Minneapolis and St. Paul. He stole most of the attention of the parade goers, and we couldn’t have asked for better help.
Stay tuned for more of Finnegan. You might get a chance to meet him at an upcoming parade or event.
