Hunger in Minnesota
In Minnesota around 491,000 people are experiencing poverty. Of this shocking number, 15% are children 18 years old and younger. That’s around 73,650 children under 18 experiencing poverty. Every year, these low-income Minnesotans miss a staggering 100 million meals – these people make up 1 in 10 of neighbors. In 2010, 14% of Minnesota households didn’t have enough money to buy food, and of those that used food shelves, 47% of adults and 14% of children skip meals because there is not enough food at home. This same year, were 3 million food shelf visits statewide and 63 million pounds of food were distributed to Minnesota families. Of the individuals helped, half of them are children.
